A 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire
May 5, 2023
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has announced today a 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire in response to calls from the United States and Saudi Arabia.
The ceasefire is intended to open humanitarian corridors, facilitate the movement of Sudanese and foreign nationals, and ensure that they receive access to necessities and can reach safe areas.
The RSF is committed to the ceasefire and welcomes all local, regional, and international initiatives aimed at securing a swift and comprehensive resolution to the war.
The RSF expresses its gratitude to the United States, Saudi Arabia, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and all other brotherly and friendly nations making efforts to bring about an end to the crisis situation in our country.
During the ceasefire, the RSF will continue to respond to any air raids or attacks by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), which are operating under the misguided leadership of SAF General Abdul Fattah al-Burhan with the support of extremist elements linked to former dictator and military officer Omar al-Bashir.
Despite previous ceasefire agreements, the SAF has continued to attack innocent civilians and residential neighbourhoods in areas under RSF control — a clear violation of international norms and laws.
We reiterate our firm commitment to the ceasefire and call upon all parties to honour it.
The RSF emphasizes that multiple decision-making centres exist within the SAF and the former regime elements backing its actions in this conflict.
We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the safety and security of the people.
